As part of its annual Kidtopia festival, the Keystone Resort builds a massive, 12-foot-high snow castle (pictured above). And it's not just for show. Kids can play on and around the fortress of dreamy frostitude, which includes a maze, slide and lookout tower. Other cool kid activities on Keystone's Dercum Mountain include disco tubing at night (reservations required) and the Glow Bug Skate Night, where kids can don glow-in-the-dark gear to beam around the outdoor ice rink like fireflies.

Although you might not find another snow fort as massive as Keystone's, Squaw Valley is upping the freeze-fun with SnoVentures, a kid-friendly snow park debuting for the 2011-2012 season. In addition to snow tubing, kids will be able to ride mini-snowmobiles (pictured left) through a just-their-size snowcourse.

    When winter slushes around, are you a Heat Miser or a Snow Miser? Although I personally lean toward the earlier, I couldn't imagine reaching adulthood without memories of playing in the white shtuff as a kid. Tirelessly moon-booting up the neighborhood's steepest hill to reap the maximum mph thrill... Sleigh-by snowball-fighting while zipping to the bottom... Launching my little sister's toboggan "not accidentally" (as she attests to this day) on an Olympic-speed course toward a swirling tumble of snow, exclamation points and stars, much like that in a cartoon panel of "Calvin & Hobbes"... Then trudging home with numb toes, sloshy gloves and an unsmackably frozen grin for the spoils of hot cocoa and marshmallows...
